During the bulk of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped inside a mental fortress built from the memories of Henry Creel. The search for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode leads them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—a discovery that may just hold the secret to his downfall once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft

Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a spyglass taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a Henry as a boy encounter an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the event involved more than a simple act of survival.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission

The play reveals the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a vessel into a plane known as the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the captain, who returned in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

The captain's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to sell to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.

The Briefcase's Contents

Based on what is understood of Brenner's work, the case almost certainly contained vials of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would later pass on to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the box could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The stage play explains that the boy was transported in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later as a different person. As a youth, he fights the whispers of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how the character Will was controlled by the entity in an earlier season.

Confronting Terror

The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory shows how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. While he commands the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a showdown between the monster and Will, who has confronted his own deepest fears to become stronger.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a key upper hand in the series finale ahead.
