The ice cream brand's Co-Founder States Parent Company Prevented Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Flavor
One of the original creators of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed that parent company Unilever prevented the launch of a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who established the business with his partner, revealed that he plans to personally create the controversial product as part of an individual series highlighting causes the company was barred from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Between Founders and Parent Company
The recent announcement escalates the ongoing conflict between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders maintain that Unilever and their ice cream division the Magnum brand improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming an Emblem for Solidarity
Mr. Cohen announced via social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for naming options plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians because of its colors, which closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Previous Activism and Recent Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
The new product line is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that originally created several years back for endorsing former political contender Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts plus Upcoming Plans
The founder revealed how he plans to develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly by Unilever.
This development comes after partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down from the company recently, after decades with the organization, mentioning worries regarding how its independence was compromised after Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
Previously, Mr. Cohen commented that "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to fight for its independence so that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the principles which it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
