The English Team to Begin Euro 2028 Campaign at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium

England’s men’s team will commence their UEFA Euro 2028 journey at the Etihad Stadium, provided that they achieve the relatively straightforward qualification for a tournament hosted across the majority of the UK and the Ireland.

Manchester City’s home ground has not staged an Three Lions game since eight years ago, when the visitors were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is almost certain to host the England side for their opening fixture on Saturday 10 June 2028.

England are scheduled to play their final two group matches at the national stadium, but, in the event of winning their group, their knockout stage opener would take place at the Newcastle stadium. Placing second would mean starting the playoffs at Everton’s ground.

Competition Kickoff and Demonstration

The championship was unveiled at an event in central London on Wednesday night. High-ranking officials from Uefa and the host FAs were heckled as they arrived the location by around fifty pro-Palestine demonstrators, who called for Israel’s national side to be removed from the sport because of the Gaza crisis.

Placards were displayed with phrases stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters shouted: “Kick Israel out.”

Event Timeline

The opening game of the tournament will be staged at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a match that will include Wales if they secure a place.

The national stadium will host the two semi-final matches and the title decider, which will be held on a Sunday in July 2028 with a start time at 5:00 PM.

It is expected that an afternoon start, which will also be implemented for European club finals from next season, will cater to families and help reach a more diverse set of viewers.

Participating Countries

The Irish team are set to play their opening match at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would follow suit at the national stadium of Scotland.

All four host countries’ teams will enter the preliminary stage; two reserved places will be set aside for any that miss out on the finals through the standard process.

Stadiums and Playoffs

Villa Park and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium finalize the nine tournament locations. All will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarterfinal matches staged at every host’s main arena.

The draw for the qualifiers will be staged in Belfast, which was dropped as a venue city last year when it became clear Casement Park could not be redeveloped in time, on 6 December 2026.

Official Statement

“This will be a championship for the followers and a celebration of everything we value about the sport – its fervor and capacity to bring people together.”

In excess of three million admissions, a record for a men’s European Championship, are expected to be made available to attendees.
