Prison Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Bolsonaro Faces Time in Prison

He contested the legal system and the legal system won.

A couple of months subsequent to being handed a 27-year sentence for attempting to “destroy” Brazil’s democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro now seems destined for incarceration.

Expected Jailing

The adjudicated instigator – who had been subject to residential detention in his estate while a series of judicial steps and challenges proceed – is broadly anticipated to be imprisoned in the coming days, amidst growing rumors that he will be sent to a notorious maximum security prison.

Past Remarks on Prisoners

Throughout Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the conservative former paratrooper displayed little mercy for Brazil’s jailed individuals.

“What’s the need to offer these scoundrels a good life?” he previously wondered. “They ought to simply be screwed, period. That’s what I reckon.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “If you don’t want to wind up behind bars, the only thing required is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”

Prison Location Debate

But the possibility of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has appalled supporters, several of whom this week visited the complex in an apparent effort to dissuade the supreme court from banishing him there.

Senator Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, stated he anticipated the elderly figure to be imprisoned in the next 10 days and was concerned his assigned prison could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe intestinal problems – the consequence of a near-fatal assault during the 2018 presidential campaign – implied it would be hazardous to keep the former president there. “His condition is very grave. He will not be able to cope if they move him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” said the senator, who also worried about packed cells and the condition of inmate food.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered seeing cells accommodating four dozen prisoners: “That is virtually one square metre per detainee.

“We talked to the prisoners and they protest, of course, of the horrible meals,” continued the senator.

Supporters Speak Out

The senator isn't the lone figure speaking out ahead of the former president’s anticipated incarceration.

Authoring in a prominent newspaper, another ally, the ex- communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “brutal” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” public service and claimed Brazil was about to experience “the greatest unfairness in its record”.

“This is an unfairness that erodes the souls of countless of Brazilians,” the former minister said.

Divided General Reaction

It is possibly true given the substantial backing Bolsonaro maintains on the right-wing. However his expected imprisonment has also gladdened the feelings of many individuals who believe he deserves to be incarcerated for planning to stop his successor from assuming office – and also conspiring to have him assassinated.

The lawmaker, a politician for the sitting leader's political party, stated: “Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a hole. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in segregation. No one wants Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We wish him to obtain dignified care – but dignified treatment behind bars. He cannot continue being his personal jailer for his whole life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro backers, who have long praising the harsh conditions of inmates, had suddenly woken up to their privileges. “Just now has the extreme right – which has repeatedly asserted that civil liberties were not for lawbreakers – opted to tour a prison to discover what situations are really like,” he remarked.

“The former president is a lawbreaker,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he earned “humiliating, degrading conduct”.

Likely Incarceration Conditions

Despite rumors that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now holds about thousands of inmates, his probable destination seems to be a adjacent prison for officers and other “unique” prisoners known as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

His potential cell are much more pleasant than those in the larger jail, although nonetheless a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro had while living in the impressive official residence, around a short distance away.

Based on sources, the room Bolsonaro could likely occupy in Papudinha has about 24 square meters – about the dimensions of vehicle spaces – and features a 130 square foot restroom with a water facility and a 12 sq metre balcony. “Bolsonaro would be allowed to have a set and even a cooler in his quarters as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” sources stated.

Ideological Reactions

Senator Lucas criticized the talked-about proposal to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a type of payback” on the part of the supreme court judge who oversaw Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will determine his outcome in the {
