Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying these drugs must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts believe the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
