Our Household Unofficial Game of the Year Awards for 2025
So, how did you experience 2025 in your household? Was it truly wonderful as one might claim on social media? Full of A-grades for the children and wild costume celebrations for the grownups? Or perhaps it was a sea of frustration with only rare enjoyable moments? And was any of it authentic, or are we all AI-generated virtual entities with perfect dental work?
I've corralled everyone together, ready or not, to reflect on the paramount thing in twelve months: which releases we were obsessed with the most. Without further ado:
Title Oldest Daughter Played the Most
Pikmin
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"This isn't my games column."
In the mobile realm, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "attempting to locate reasonable healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In reality."
Game Middle Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He was offended that I suggested it. I respect that.
Title Youngest Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into drama school, but when she stepped away from the mic, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also went on in great detail about her successes on The Sims, where her character has a thriving utopia with far better healthcare than her eldest sister has outside the game.
Release the Spouse Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at 60% completion and finished the year at 82%. She's in it for the long run not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Release I Teased My Kids About My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Every time I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I rib him like a cross between a persistent critic. When he objects, I reply that I am behaving this way to toughen him up so he can mature and play games for mature audiences. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Impressive Gaming Family Member of the Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
It wasn't even close for this one. She is unstoppable. Superior than I was at my peak gaming days in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
No other game compared to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted card game wizard’s poker, with its ever-changing range of cards and game variations.
Game I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that constantly evolve their range is you have a moment of clarity and realise it is all just an attempt to suck you into fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Stunning reinvention of a legendary franchise. Immersive atmosphere from the off. I wish I could dispatch my demons so effectively in real life.
Title I Wish I Had Played More (Thoughtful Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just was short on the focused attention to give it what it needed earlier this year. With family visits over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the early morning after appropriate hospitality.
Title That Kept Me Sane When I Needed It
Balatro
I know Balatro was 2024’s sleeper hit, but I was late to it. And it is remarkable. It just gets absolutely everything right. The core concept is a fantastic concept, but the effects behind the different joker cards are so inventive it has become a game I literally would play any time. Combine that with the wittiness of the card design, and this is an true high-water mark of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a broken-down lift for hours just so I have nothing to do but play it.
Game I Got the Most Flak For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I received a minor pile-on when I mentioned how a specific bug in another game soured the experience for me, but that other title is still a massive gaming achievement in terms of art, sound, acting – which I appreciated even more after slogging through Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the reader who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I mention that in the exact way, because I acknowledge the engagement, and he is obviously an excellent judge of character.
Game Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Fine. Give me a bastard-hard non-linear thing and provide little guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". What a joy. I understand that it is beautiful and is perfection if you are into this kind of thing, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my mid-fifties. I was around back when many games were like this, and I'm over it. It was okay when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many less comfortable things.
Biggest Gaming News of 2025
Debate between corporate partnerships that sparked debate, and high launch costs. Both ethically dubious and unpleasant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Stupid Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all make interesting names shouted from the garden at bedtime.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. No joke. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or doomscrolling, but it is sore like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the day.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the end of days.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
