New York Unveils Online Platform for Citizens to Share ICE Videos After Detentions of 4 US Citizens
New York state AG has introduced a new digital platform urging locals to submit photos and videos of ICE operations throughout the state. This move comes just a shortly after a major immigration operation disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, prompting large-scale protests.
American Citizens Held During Enforcement Action
A lawmaker announced during a news conference that four American citizens were arrested and held for "almost a full day" after the enforcement action. Protests occurred in the city on consecutive evenings.
"Every New Yorker is entitled to live without fear," state officials declared in a release.
"For those who saw and recorded immigration enforcement recently, I ask you to share that evidence with my office. We are dedicated to assessing these reports and determining any legal breaches."
Form Details
The form provides spaces to send visual evidence of the raid, plus a field to specify location information. Before submitting, users must tick a option that states that "the attorney general may use any materials, images, or footage in a public document, including in a legal proceeding or government document."
Details of the ICE Action
The Chinatown raid, which observers say involved dozens of government officers, occurred in a famous area of NYC where fake products and additional items are commonly traded widely – typically to tourists.
Videos of the incident show several hooded and equipped federal agents zip-tying and detaining a person, and forcing aside witnesses. Masses of locals pursued the officers down the sidewalks. An military-style transport was noticed rolling through the urban roads.
Leadership Statements
In a midweek briefing held with the immigrant advocacy group, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, announced that four nationals were arrested by immigration for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no situations where US citizens should be taken for no reason." He said the citizens were freed on the following day with no legal action taken.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not to take criminals off the street," Goldman remarked. "This is a militarized effort to provoke unrest. It is merely a pretext to generate turmoil for the government to deploy the armed forces to stop violence that they have created."
Extensive Outcry
Outrage over the ICE raid quickly spread – all three political contenders criticized the raid, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Repeatedly, the Trump administration selects oppressive displays that generate terror, rather than security. It has to end," a political candidate stated.
NYC immigrant rights groups voiced concern too.
"Federal officers raided the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, covered personnel and protective equipment to go after small merchants working to survive. This raid had nothing to do with community security and everything to do with terrorizing immigrant families and neighborhoods," stated the president of a major immigrant coalition.
Official Guidelines
ICE policy forbids the detention of US citizens and the agency has claimed it does not arrest or detain American nationals. However, external research has revealed that numerous citizens have been detained unlawfully by immigration authorities since the start of the existing leadership.
Ongoing Trend
ICE raids have been cropping up increasingly in New York and nationwide this year.
A mid-October raid in central NYC was the first known raid on an refuge facility of the present government. Rallies opposing ICE are widespread as are accusations of force and inhumane treatment.
Latest, a letter submitted by legal entities alleged inadequate care of women with child in ICE facilities.
