Forecasters have indicated a chilly beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected across much of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Plans Go Ahead Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are expected to go ahead, following last year's cancellation. This comes despite advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those partying, so extra layers will be essential," noted the national forecaster.

Displays Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. Temperatures are expected to be chilly, meaning warm wraps vital, according to forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• People are advised to allow extra time for journeys on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on public transport.

Temperatures Forecast to Plummet Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Public Health Alerts Activated

In addition, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this signified the weather was expected to cause notable consequences across health and social care services. This encompasses a potential rise in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.

The advice for all is clear: to see the new year in safely, preparing for winter conditions is completely paramount.
