Michael Jordan Testifies He Felt No Fear of Nascar in Antitrust Trial

The basketball icon, as he cordially introduced himself in a Charlotte court on Friday, admitted that his drive to win and novelty within the sport motivated his effort with 23XI Racing to confront Nascar over perceived violations of competition laws.

Team Investment and a Competitive Drive

Jordan shared financial and corporate details of his 23XI team, saying he invested $40 million of his personal wealth into the Cup Series operation co-founded with business partner Curtis Polk and longtime driver Denny Hamlin.

“It fell to someone to act,” Jordan stated in the Charlotte courtroom. “As a newcomer, I wasn’t afraid. I felt I could challenge Nascar as a whole. From my perspective, the sport required examination through a new lens.”

Central Issue: Charter Agreements and Renewal Demands

The heart of the case involves the expiration of a 2016 agreement where Nascar provided each team a “charter”. This system mirrors other major leagues with separately owned franchises, like the NBA’s Hornets or the NFL’s Panthers. This deal was set to expire in 2024 when Nascar demanded teams renew their charters.

Jordan was on the witness stand for an hour and exited the courthouse to pandemonium, with onlookers and reporters vying for a glimpse or a picture of the sports legend.

Spearheading the Fight
