Democrats Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated anger after the ex-president accused a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and declared they should be arrested and penalized "with execution" following their posting of a disputed video.

The Recording That Triggered the Controversy

The clip, shared on earlier this week, features six Democratic elected officials who previously served in armed forces or intelligence roles.

"Like us, you all took an pledge to protect and support this founding document," the lawmakers declared in the 90-second video. "At present, the threats to our constitution are not only from abroad, but from within our own country. Our laws are clear, you can reject improper directives, you can refuse illegal orders, you must reject illegal orders. No one has to carry out commands that violate the law or our national charter."

The Former President's Angry Reply

The video message seemed to prompt a heated reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.

On the following morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate publication, he wrote: "This is really concerning, and Harmful to our Country. Their statements cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Representatives Respond

Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, House Democratic leader issued a combined declaration condemning the statements.

"Partisan aggression has no position in America," they declared. "Representatives who appeared in the video all acted our country with great loyalty and honor. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and harmful threats of violence against elected officials, and appeal to GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."

The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to ensure the safety of these members and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must without delay remove these radical social media posts and withdraw his dangerous language before he leads to violence," the announcement added.

Representatives' Firm Response

The representatives who participated in the video also published a response.

"We identify as ex-military personnel and national security professionals who love this nation and took an vow to protect and support the constitution of the United States," they said. "This commitment is permanent, and we intend to honor it. No threat, pressure, or call for violence will deter us from that sacred responsibility."

"What's most telling is that the former president views it subject to penalty by execution for us to reiterate the law," they added. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their protection as they carry out their pledge to the national charter and responsibility to follow only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."

They continued: "Every American must join forces and condemn the ex-president's demands for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a period for principled stance."

Additional Governmental Comments

The Opposition leader also censured Trump's remarks and published on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is demanding the death of elected officials."

He stated: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. All senators, all representatives, every American – without partisan consideration – should censure this immediately and without qualification."

The Republican House speaker defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This constitutes very harmful, you have leading members of the government instructing soldiers to defy commands, I think that's unprecedented in the nation's past."

The GOP official also reportedly stated to journalists that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the offense of sedition" but that "lawyers have to analyze the language and establish all that."

Administration Reaction

During a White House press conference on that day, when questioned by a media member, "Is the president want to kill members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson answered: "No."

"Let's be clear about what the president is reacting to," the spokesperson declared. "There are sitting members of the American legislature who coordinated to orchestrate a video message to members of the American armed forces, to current military personnel encouraging them to disobey the executive's lawful orders."

She stated: "The purity of our military rests on the command structure, and if that structure is broken, it can lead to people getting killed, it can cause disorder, and precisely what these elected officials ... are fundamentally supporting."
