According to a high-ranking defense official, the American military executed a lethal kinetic engagement on a boat in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of four people.

“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a deadly attack on a craft linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in international waters. Surveillance confirmed the vessel was traveling along a known narco-trafficking route and was engaged in illicit drug transport. All four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no American forces were injured.”

Background and Prior Actions

The statement follows a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all targeted oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the American leader alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, pledging to escalate the military presence.

Just on Tuesday, US defense officials stated it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, more than 20 military engagements have killed at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.

Government Defends Actions Amidst Scrutiny

The administration has encountered increasing demands to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, officials have declined to do so. The administration has supported its campaign as a successful operation, arguing it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the bounds of legal military action.

While the administration has said the operation is about halting drugs destined for the US, comments from a top official seemed to suggest a broader geopolitical objective. In a recent interview, the senior advisor remarked the leader “wants to keep on blowing boats up until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”

This suggests the series of strikes may be linked to a push to remove Venezuela's sitting leadership.
