Afghan Rulers Utilized Left-Behind UK Gear to Track Down Local Nationals Who Worked With Western Troops, Investigation Learns

A confidential source has disclosed an official investigation that the UK abandoned sensitive devices allowing Afghanistan's rulers to identify Afghans who worked with international military.

Information Leak Puts Thousands in Danger

The source, identified as Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the data leak were instructed to move homes and change their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.

Members of Parliament are investigating official response of a serious disclosure of confidential data involving approximately 19k individuals who had applied to move to the UK to avoid militant rule.

The Information Breach Was Discovered

A data file including confidential details, such as identities, addresses and sometimes household data, was inadvertently disclosed by an official employed at UK special forces headquarters in February 2022.

The leak was discovered in late 2023, when identities of nine people who had sought to move to Britain appeared on social media.

Regime's Resources

“There seems to be a false assumption that militant forces lack comparable resources that allied forces use,” Person A informed MPs.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. If they have a contact number, they can trace your exact position. That is what intelligence groups accomplished.”

During testimony about regarding if authorities had access to necessary encryption, the whistleblower confirmed: “They've got everything.”

Aftermath of the Security Lapse

Preliminary research presented to the investigation suggested that approximately fifty relatives and colleagues of Afghans affected by the leak had been killed.

A legal restriction about the breach was implemented in August 2023 and restricted relevant facts about it from being made public until recently.

Protective Actions

Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization she was working with advised Afghan families they were assisting that they had “concerns that mobile communications had been compromised”.

“We recommended that they change residence if they could and altered their mobile numbers. Those were the crucial data that, should militant forces had access to this information, would cause identification and capture,” Person A explained.

Disputed Conclusions

Person A contested that internal investigation carried out by a former official had been wrong to state that the acquisition of the records by militant forces was “minimally impact present danger”.

“The thing to remember is that these individuals are in hiding from the Taliban; they live secretly. The primary issue involves past work history.”

Person A described horrific abuse endured by concerned people, comprising electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.

“Instances include young kids who have had bones crushed to pressure households to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
